Game Camera Photos: Things to Consider
Clear, well-lit photos are the best when it comes to using game camera photos for aging deer. Some other key attributes that make for a good photo include deer that are standing still, broadside to the camera, and have their heads up. Deer that have their heads down, are feeding or moving tend to look different because of altered body proportions.
It should go without saying, but it also helps tremendously if the entire body of the deer is in the photo/frame since using physical characteristics of deer is the basis of aging deer on the hoof. The best photos are those that feature rut or pre-rut bucks since many of the features used for aging are evident during this time and throughout the hunting season.
Whitetail bucks look different in early summer and late winter because of hormonal changes and weight loss, respectively, but feel free to submit photos at those times. Just understand that it is often more difficult to evaluate a deer during those times.
